    LNG Plant-based Helium Extraction Facility
Although some natural gas fields contain helium, the helium content is very low and therefore it is very costly to directly extract helium from natural gases. A composition test of the noncondensate gases generated during natural gas liquefaction and the BOG (boil-off gas) generated during LNG storage shows a helium content of over 1% which is valuable for extraction. For that reason, Fullcryo has developed the technology of LNG plant-based helium extraction from BOG which uses cryogenic distillation and cryogenic condensation method to recover LNG and acquire high-purity helium gases. It is an effective way for the comprehensive development of helium resources.

BOG-HED utilizes cryogenic separation method for helium extraction and liquefaction. Most methane is recovered through cryogenic distillation tower and the remaining mixture gases mostly include the nitrogen, helium and hydrogen. Then the mixtures are further cooled and most nitrogen in it is removed through condensate separation in order to produce the crude helium with a content of over 75%. Such crude helium is then subject to hydrogen-removal process through catalytic bed in order to acquire raw helium in a purity of over 95%. The raw helium then is fed to the internal freeze-out purifier inside the helium liquefier cold box where the gases impurities are frozen and removed and high-purity helium is acquired. Finally, helium is further liquefied in the liquefier.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why is helium extracted from LNG BOG rather than directly from natural gas?

Directly extracting helium from natural gases is highly costly due to its very low content in typical gas fields. However, the BOG (boil-off gas) generated during LNG storage and noncondensate gases from natural gas liquefaction contain over 1% helium, making BOG-based extraction highly valuable and economically viable.

What separation technologies are utilized in Fullcryo's systems?

Fullcryo utilizes a combination of advanced separation methods including Cryogenic method Separation (cryogenic distillation and cryogenic condensation) and Membrane Separation to achieve efficient LNG recovery and high-purity helium gas extraction.

What core components make the Fullcryo helium extraction system efficient?

The system features a self-developed high-speed helium gas bearing turbine expander for rapid temperature reach, an ultra-low leakage rate all-aluminum plate-fin heat exchanger to minimize heat waste, an efficient oil filtration system, and pneumatic cryogenic control valves for enhanced accuracy, all integrated with intelligent control technology.

How does the BOG-HED process purify and liquefy helium?

First, methane is recovered through cryogenic distillation, leaving a mixture of nitrogen, helium, and hydrogen. Most nitrogen is removed via condensate separation to produce crude helium (>75%). Hydrogen is then removed through a catalytic bed to obtain raw helium (>95%). Finally, the raw helium enters a freeze-out purifier inside the liquefier cold box to freeze out remaining impurities before final liquefaction.

What comprehensive services does Fullcryo provide for projects?

Fullcryo offers end-to-end support for helium extraction projects, including experienced design and R&D, modernized equipment manufacturing, professional installation & commissioning, and comprehensive project consulting services.
